The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight is one of the most popular cycling events on the cycling calendar and is among the top five largest road races in South Africa. This event is managed and owned by Retina South Africa and ALL proceeds go directly towards finding treatments for Retinal Blindness and has raised R10 million in its 29- year history.
The 2017 race marked the 10th anniversary of Dis-Chem Pharmacies being the naming sponsor and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality are once again partners in this exciting race.
The 116km is a seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour whilst the 62km event caters for the novice and recreational cyclists.
The race is organised by a volunteer committee of cyclists and specialists in the fields of communication and safety. These include representatives from Springs Wheelers Cycling Club, Hamnet Emergency Communications, Road Rangers, ASM safety consultants, Red Cross Benoni and Gauteng East Cycling Association.
The 2017 winner of the Men’s Elite and under 23 category was Calvin Beneke, the rising star of the Telkom professional team. Both his father Gary and Uncle Mark Beneke were past winners of the event.
The ladies’ event was won by Heidi Dalton the new SA Road Champion. A total of 5700 cyclists participated – the best field in over 10 years. Cyclists donated over R80 000 in the donation draw which was matched by the Dis-Chem Foundation. Jaco Olivier won a 7 night stay for 2 at Michamvi Sunset Bay hotel in Zanzibar and Farrel Osher won a Trek Road Bike.
