There were three race distances on offer: 116km, 62km and an 8km fun ride for the less adventurous.

Para Category

Linsay Engelbrecht, a Para Tri-Athlete who has proudly represented South Africa at the Commonwealth Games and a volunteer at Retina South Africa, strategically leveraged the event as a platform to promote inclusivity by involving more para cyclists and raising awareness about retinal vision loss.

In the para category, the event witnessed a surge in participation, including visually impaired cyclists, hand cyclists, and tandem teams.

Linsay orchestrated a remarkable feat by recruiting 21 sighted volunteers willing to pilot tandem bicycles alongside Visually Impaired Persons (VIPs) seated at the back. This audacious initiative aimed to empower and transform lives, as these courageous duos tackled a grueling 62 km road race, competing shoulder-to-shoulder with cyclists possessing normal vision. The racecourse became a canvas for strength, resilience, and the indomitable spirit that competitive road cycling ignites.

A heartfelt expression of gratitude extends to the dedicated volunteer pilots who demonstrated unwavering commitment, patience, and camaraderie with their VIP tandem partners. Their selflessness fueled the success of this inclusive endeavor.

Special recognition goes to the sponsors of the Para Category,  The Silver Flair and Rebel Safety Gear, whose contributions made the race possible. Additionally, kudos to A9 Media Design for the eye-catching cycling jersey designs. The collective efforts of organizations like Silverton Engineering, Panda Sports, David & Deale, Benwood Manufacturing, Hydro Chemical, Pick ‘n Pay Oaklands, Consulting Chemical Labs and the dedicated employees of Sensory Logix ensured that the “Save Our Sight” Team could participate in this transformative event.
