Ilse Hayes Carstens

Ilse has been a star in Athletics for many years. She won her first gold Paralympic medal in Beijing in 2008 for long jump and also won a silver in the 100m track event.

At the London 2012  Paralympics she again took gold in the long jump and silver in the 100 meter track. At the Rio Paralympics in 2016 she took the silver medal in both the 100 and 400 metres track event.

She has won numerous gold medals at World Championships  and countless sporting awards including the Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability at the 2013 Western Cape Sports. Her sporting philosophy / motto “Always give 100% in every session so that you approach everything with a positive attitude and you don’t doubt any moment.” (Athlete, 22 Oct 2015).

Off the track she received a degree in Sports Science and then her honours in Pediatric Sciences.

Ilsa has Stargardt Disease.
