Screen for Vision – Screen for Life Seminar
A very successful Screen for Vision – Screen for Life seminar was held at Novartis, Midrand on Friday 28th September during World Retina Week. The seminar was organised by Retina South Africa to highlight the risks and possible prevention of Diabetes type 2 which is reaching epidemic proportions, worldwide. This seminar dealt with early detection, prevention and severe health risks such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, amputation and blindness.
Mr Audience Maluleke, President of the South African Optometric Association spoke on the Role of the Optometrist in screening for the early retinal changes that are the warning signs of serious complications of Diabetes.
Mr Nicholas Wiltshire from the Screen for Life project spoke on the importance of the patient held record in tracking the disease.
Mrs Tanya Alberts gave all the attendees a sensible and healthy eating guide during her talk- Eat to Live.
Mrs Belinda Leibowitz explained the pivotal role of the Occupational Therapiost in the rehabilitation of low vision patients.
Karen Denton – well known Diabetes warrior, gave attendees valuable insight on the prevention and management of Diabetes.
Claudette Medefindt, Director of Science for Retina South Africa and moderator of the seminar spoke on the importance of physical fitness in the prevention of Diabetes.
